The University of North Carolina System has named five students as 2020 Marian Drane Graham Scholars. The scholars will participate in an eight-week immersive and experiential summer program, designed to help them develop leadership skills and gain a better understanding of key issues facing public higher education.
CHAPEL HILL, NC – In light of the COVID-19 public health crisis, the University of North Carolina (UNC) System Office and NC Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) are working together to ensure NC students remain on-track to access postsecondary educational opportunities. North Carolina students and their families should be recognized for their remarkable resilience and perseverance throughout this pandemic, and the UNC System and NCDPI understand the unique challenges ahead.
The UNC System has released annual updates to each constituent university’s Strategic Plan Dashboard. The new data, available on the UNC System website, demonstrates that the UNC System is on a steady track to attain its five-year Strategic Plan goals, with student success far exceeding the national average.
The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program is all about providing structure and support to kids who face disenfranchisement in school, so they graduate and make the transition to college – typically becoming first-generation college students. And this spring has brought another huge transition for AVID students and their tutors, turning their in-person relationship into a “Google Meet relationship.”
I expect to reopen our campuses for the Fall 2020 Semester and look forward to welcoming our faculty and students back to their classrooms and labs this fall. To do so, we are working closely with our chancellors to chart a course forward.
The Department of Forensic Anthropology at Western Carolina University recently hosted a two-day continuing education class created in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and attended by 24 federal, state and local fire investigators.
CHAPEL HILL, NC – The UNC Board of Governors voted to honor two UNC System faculty members with the 2019 Governor James E. Holshouser, Jr. Award for Excellence in Public Service. The recipients are Dr. Mark I. West from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Dr. Martin Posey from the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
CHAPEL HILL, NC – During a special meeting of the UNC Board of Governors, held on March 30, 2020, Interim President Bill Roper announced that the UNC System is committed to prorated reimbursements of payments for unused housing and dining services as a result of the UNC System’s rapid response to COVID-19.
