CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina A&T State University and North Carolina Central University have released the names of this year’s recipients of the prestigious Cheatham-White Scholarship.
These recipients represent the inaugural class for this merit-based scholarship, which was approved by the General Assembly in 2017. The scholarship is available to incoming first year students attending North Carolina A&T State University and North Carolina Central University.
The scholarship fully funds four years of higher education, covering the cost of each recipient’s tuition, student fees, housing, meals, textbooks, supplies, travel, personal expenses and also a laptop. Each scholarship also provides four summers of fully funded enrichment and networking opportunities, which may include international travel and study. The cash value of each scholarship is estimated at $75,000, with state funding matched by each university.
Named in honor of Henry Cheatham and George Henry White–African Americans who represented North Carolina in Congress around the turn of the 20th century–this highly competitive scholarship rewards incoming first year students who have demonstrated excellence across all facets of their high school careers. These recipients have maintained a minimum 4.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale and earned a minimum 1280 SAT score or a 28 ACT score. In addition, each has demonstrated a commitment to community service and leadership, and each has been actively involved in a diverse array of extracurricular activities.
“The Cheatham-White Scholarship program recognizes future leaders with a strong commitment to public service by providing an opportunity to receive a top-notch education,” said UNC System President Margaret Spellings. “These scholarships also honor the legacy of great public servants like Henry Cheatham and George Henry White.”
