Fayetteville State University (FSU) was one of four historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) from North Carolina awarded 2019 Research Equipment Awards by the United States Department of Defense (DoD). The other North Carolina schools are Johnson C. Smith University, North Carolina Central University, and North Carolina A&T State University.

The DoD awarded $23.2 million to 59 minority-serving institutions as part of the fiscal year 2019 DoD HBCUs and Minority-Serving Institutions Research and Education Program. The awards range from $122,786 to $600,000 and support the acquisition of research equipment at 24 HBCUs, 34 MSIs and one Tribal College.
