Partnership will create better awareness of the challenges and opportunities facing service member students

CHAPEL HILL, NC – The University of North Carolina System and PsychArmor Institute have announced a new joint partnership implemented to help educators and administrators better understand the challenges and opportunities both active duty and veteran students face on campus.

This recently signed memorandum of understanding between the two partners will bring PsychArmor’s specialized resources to the entire UNC System. PsychArmor’s programs, which include online courses, will be available 24/7 to administrators, faculty and staff to cultivate awareness and sensitivity on campus about military experiences and culture, enabling UNC to better meet the needs of military-affiliated students. This is PsychArmor’s first official partnership with a public higher education system.

“This much needed partnership will give faculty the opportunity to increase their own military cultural competency,” said UNC System Interim President Bill Roper. “We have active duty service members and veterans at all of our institutions, and it is important that they feel supported and accepted.  Being able to address the issues our military and veterans face is a priority for the System, and this partnership will play an important role in helping us understand their needs.”

The courses now offered through PsychArmor include:

•             Developing a Military Awareness Program on Campus

•             15 Things Veterans Want You to Know

•             Academic Accommodations in Higher Ed

•             The VA Campus Toolkit

•             How to Connect With a Checked Out Veteran

“PsychArmor Institute is proud to be partnered with the University of North Carolina system,” said PsychArmor Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Tina Atherall. “This collaboration will help create a supportive culture for veterans, service members and their families by incorporating military core competency trainings throughout the UNC educational system. PsychArmor’s educational resources will make each faculty and staff member on campus more aware of military culture and challenges our community faces.”

Addressing the needs of military-affiliated students has been a priority for the UNC Board of Governors, through its Special Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs. The committee has met regularly to meet and hear from students, faculty, and administrators to discuss and address issues of students who are in the armed services.

“As an Air Force veteran and the chairman for the Board of Governors Special Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs, I am proud of the great work our faculty and staff do on behalf of our military-affiliated students,” said Committee chairman Leo Daughtry. “Partnering with PsychArmor Institute ensures that the UNC system is well positioned to be a national leader in serving our military students.”
