UNCW, working alongside New Hanover County Schools, has finalized an agreement to open Wilmington’s first K-8 year-round public school at D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy this summer. Approved by the New Hanover County Board of Education on March 6, the agreement paves the way for UNCW to enroll students and hire teachers for the 2018-19 school year.
“We have enjoyed a great partnership between the Watson College of Education and the New Hanover County School System for decades,” said Dean Van Dempsey. “This collaborative initiative with D.C. Virgo is a shared commitment to creating great learning experiences for children, the community and professional educators.”
Beginning in July, D.C. Virgo will offer a family-engaged learning environment designed to support the academic, social and emotional growth of students from kindergarten through the eighth grade. Curriculum will focus on literacy to help students develop strong reading, writing and public speaking skills, and personalized, exploratory learning options called “Quests” will also be introduced to extend experiences beyond the classroom and into the community.
The school will also provide wrap-around services including social and emotional support, medical services for children and families and access to opportunities and resources at UNCW.
