The UNC System is committed to maintaining learning and working environments free from gender-based discrimination. As required by Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX), the University does not discriminate on the basis of sex in its education programs and activities. Examples of Title IX violations may include the following: sex discrimination, sexual harassment (including sexual violence), or other forms of sexual misconduct. The University encourages anyone who thinks that he or she has been subjected to a Title IX violation related to any education program or activity to immediately report the incident.

The UNC System Office maintains a System-wide policy to establish legally supportable, fair, effective, and efficient procedures for student disciplinary proceedings. The UNC Policy Manual explains the minimum standard for these proceedings in chapter 700.4 – Student Conduct and Discipline.

What is Title IX?

Title IX is the federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex (gender) in any educational program or activity that receives federal support.

What programs or activities are covered by Title IX?

Because the University receives federal funding, nearly all of the University’s programs and activities are covered by Title IX.

What discrimination is prohibited by Title IX?

Under Title IX, discrimination based on sex includes sexual harassment, sexual assault/violence, interpersonal violence (including domestic and dating violence), stalking, and sexual misconduct. Title IX also prohibits retaliation against individuals who raise a concern and/or participate in an investigation regarding an alleged Title IX violation.

What happens when I report a Title IX concern?

If you experience a Title IX incident, Title IX requires the institution to take prompt action to eliminate the harassment, prevent its recurrence, and address its effects. The requirement to address gender-based discrimination varies, depending on the nature of the event. The UNC System encourages individuals are strongly encouraged to discuss specific questions with the Title IX Coordinator at their institutions.
